Who better to ask to review this latest book from Busypencilcase Communications Publishing by someone who has already reviewed the original first edition in 2019? Consultant Podiatric Surgeon for Nottingham, Antony Maher FRCPodS, is a renowned foot surgeon and researcher specialising in diabetes. Here is his review of the book.
A Complete Patient Guide to Bunion Problems
To borrow a popular advertising slogan, this book does it exactly what it says on the tin. I was fortunate enough to read the first version (Bunion, Hallux Valgus Behind the Scenes) released in 2019. If I had to sum up this second updated and extended version in one word, I’d say comprehensive. This new edition is without doubt an extensive tour de force of all thing’s bunion.
David Tollafield wisely teamed up with Dr Tim Kilmartin bringing together two experts with 60 years’ experience of caring for patients and fixing bunions. It’s fair to say few, if any, will have contributed more to the development of podiatric surgery and bunion correction in the UK. And what a result, this book leaves no stone unturned in helping patients understand what a bunion is, how to manage the condition themselves before delving into the surgical options, surgical risks and complications.
Expertise is all well and good, but the authors have chosen to include multiple testimonials from people who have been through bunion surgery. We can all, patients and clinicians alike, learn a great deal from listening to the lived experience of those who have already been through treatment.
Although this book is explicitly written for patients, I would commend it to a wider audience, including podiatrists, nurses, trainees, podiatric surgeons, and orthopaedic surgeons. Anthony Maher FRCPodS, November 2024.

An essential read—answers the age-old question, ‘Is there someone I can speak to who had had this done?’—Antony Wilkinson, Consultant Podiatric Surgeon.
Well written and highly recommended —there was more post-op information than anything I could find!—Nicola Harvey(former nurse and patient).
